PEDRO GUEVARRA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Pedro Guevarra Elementary School is the oldest school in the Division of Manila. Built in 1762, it was intended to be a place where traders from China would come to do business and pay their customs duties. One of its oldest building is the Maceda building. It is a (3) three storey building that was built in 1997 through Senator Ernesto Maceda’s project. located at San Fernando Street, San Nicolas Manila. During the Marcos regime, the location of the building is a greenhouse. It has a floor area of 363 sqm with three (3) rooms per floor.

  • In anticipation to the “Big One” the Department of Public Works and Highways DPWH has formed an Earthquake Resiliency Program Management Office (ER-PMO). This is to ensure earthquake resilience of the country’s infrastructure including strengthening of government school buildings located on major fault that cannot withstand earthquake. Dpwh hire consulting services for the structural assessment on various government school buildings that includes Maceda Building of Pedro Guevarra Elementary School. After conducting inspection, gathering datas and testing of sample of existing structures. It was found out that the building cannot withstand 7.2 magnitude earthquake or higher. So, they recommended that the building must undergo rehabilitation or retrofitting.
  • Rehabilitation/Retrofitting of the building is by concrete jacketing and by application of carbon fiber reinforced polymer.

  • Retrofitting/Structural Improvement of columns using Carbon Fiber Sheet (CFS) for strengthening the concrete structures externally.
